Equality
Clubs should be aware that in 2010 an Equality Act was agreed. Here are some basic points relevant to Rugby Clubs.
Equality Act 2010
This is the principal legislation on discrimination and equality. You are not allowed to discriminate on basis of age, disability, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or pregnancy! (Protected characteristics)
What is discrimination?
- Direct discrimination – treat person less favourably. e.g. Don’t allow women into bar or end of season dinner.
- Indirect discrimination – Club rule that would rule out certain people. e.g. Only scrum caps on pitch would discriminate against Sikhs.
- Harassment – unwanted conduct which violates person’s dignity, or creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for them. e.g. Nicknames that may embarrass.
- Victimisation – picking on a particular person. e.g. Excluding from team or activities because they have learning difficulties.
